A pioneer recycling company

Already 1876, ten different chemical companies founded the `Duisburger Kupferhütte` (Copper Mill of Duisburg). The mill's main task was to carry out the centralised processing of residues. The entrepreneurs and co-founders Julius Curtius and Julius Weber herewith initiated one of the first recycling companies worldwide.

At that time, waste materials processed normally contained iron and low quantities of non-ferrous materials, which were accumulated by the production of sulphuric acid out of pyrites. That was the process the Copper Mill of Duisburg utilised to attain copper, zinc, lead, cadmium and pig iron.

As the chemical industry finally switched their sulphuric acid production out of pyrites to elementary sulphur, the end of this process at DK had come.
