Process-related waste gas is being created during the sintering of waste materials which are respectively recycled by DK. As DK feels committed to environmental protection, this gas has been purified according to state-of-the-art findings ensuring that its emission is completely harmless. Since DK has inaugurated its secondary waste gas purification plant, its sintering plant is being considered one of the cleanest worldwide.

The waste gas purification plant in Duisburg-Hochfeld activated in 1998 was a substantial investment of 12 million EUR. At the same time, this has been a further step to improve sustainability.

Active environmental protection

The DK waste gas purification plant consists of a spray absorber, a baghouse filter, and an additional hearth furnace coke dosing. A lime milk suspension is dispersed in the spray absorber by using a rotating nozzle. The acid waste gas (esp. sulphur dioxide) elements are chemically bonded, and released in the downstream baghouse filter as solid matter, and therefore reduced to the required limit values' level. The hearth furnace installed after the spray absorber is supposed to release organic substances, especially dioxins and furanes.
